Port Chalmers Musueum - Pioneer Room upgrade
1 Aug 2013
The Pioneer Room at the Port Chalmers Museum is getting a makeover, with the Otago Community Trust contributing $25,000 towards the project.
The Port Chalmers Historical Society has set up new display areas in the Pioneer Room based on the shop fronts of businesses that existed in the harbour town in the 1890's. They've researched the project, right down to sourcing the original lettering styles from invoices at the time, to make it as authentic as possible. The display fronts include a photographer, draper, pharmacist and stationery seller, watch maker and a general store.
The Museum, which also features photographic and painting collections as well as the area's maritime history and its social past, is open every day, and enjoys many overseas visitors courtesy of the numerous cruise ships that dock at Port Chalmers each summer.
