Port Chalmers History on Show
21 Aug 2014
What better way to show off Port Chalmers maritime history than to build a boatshed addition to the community’s historic bluestone museum building.
The Otago Community Trust is helping Port Chalmers to capture its maritime and social history for the benefit of all of Otago, by helping to fund a major redevelopment of the museum.
A new boatshed is now home to several boats, including the deck cabin of an old trader, to give visitors an idea of 19th century travel on the seas. The museum is also proud of the building’s mezzanine floor, which has a great view of activities on the container port.
New display cabinets installed in the Museum’s pioneer room depict local history, including many main street shop fronts. The museum has also updated its military display and Antarctic exhibition, with the museum reopening in September, just in time for the 2014-15 summer cruise ship season.
