Otago Community Trust, October 2014 Donations

Media Release

Otago is the place to be this summer, if the number of festivals and events supported by the Otago Community Trust is anything to go by.

The Otago Community Trust donated a total of $207,430 to 37 organisations in October, the funding including several high profile festivals and some smaller events, new and long-running.

Over November, the Trust helped with costs for the Dunedin Pride 2014 Festival, and the successful South Dunedin Street Festival, a free event providing a low cost fun day celebrating all things South Dunedin. It also supported the 2014 Show Me Shorts Film Festival during this month, with screenings in Oamaru, Dunedin and Alexandra, as well as educational short films sessions for Otago schools.

In North Otago, the Trust support included funding towards the very successful Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations week held from November 12 to 16,  and helped with the cost of putting on "Christmas in the Park" - a free, family friendly event coming up on December 21.

In South Otago, the Trust is again supporting Tri Pounawea, a community duathalon with walking and mountain bike options in the Catlins being held on December 7.

The Trust donated funds to the Summerdaze festival 2104 New Year celebrations and firework display in Wanaka, the annual Challenge Wanaka triathlon on February 22, 2015, and for the Central Otago Regional Choir to present a concert series in Central Otago over 2015.

The NZ International Early Music Festival Trust has been given funds to hold the 2015 Early Music Festival in Dunedin from February 27 to March 8 2015, which includes a series of talks and musical performances.  And as always, the Trust has supported the Dunedin Santa Parade on December 7, with $15,000 towards organising costs.

As well as events, the Trust also donated $20,000 to the Dunedin City Council - South Dunedin Cycling Project to deliver cycle skills training programmes.   The Project plans a series of on-going cycle education activities and events to school students and families in South Dunedin.

Dunedin City Council Safe and Sustainable Travel Co-ordinator Charlotte Flaherty said the aim is to increase participation in cycling in South Dunedin, where access to transport is an issue, and at the same time to equip the community with skills to use the new cycle infrastructure.

Initiatives over the next few months include skills training for South Dunedin schools, training community leaders to teach cycle skills training, establishing a cycle and helmet library, and a range of fun recreational activities involving the school and community.

As it has done for many years, the Otago Community Trust again supported the Skeggs Foundation coaching programme.  The $25,000 donation helps to fund Otago coaches and officials who support the development of local elite athletes and provide elite-level competitions.

The Trust also donated $20,000 to Fairfield School towards providing a community meeting space and toilet facilities on a new classroom block being built on the school grounds.
