Otago Community Trust, November & December 2015 Donations

18 Dec 2015

Media Release

Otago Community Trust donates over $1.2 million to 49 Otago organisations.

A donation from the Otago Community Trust will help bring a German Messerschmitt 109 aircraft from England especially for a special Battle of Britain 75th commemoration at Warbirds over Wanaka 2016.

Warbirds over Wanaka General Manager Ed Taylor is thrilled that the Trust’s $10,000 donation will allow them to stage a spectacular Messerschmitt and Spitfire mock battle feature at the airshow, complete with pyrotechnics and a commentary from pilot and former TVNZ weather presenter Jim Hickey.

“We’re pleased to have the Trust’s support. It’s very expensive to transport an 80-year-old plane via container, which means it has to come in parts, and to bring in one of the world’s top warbird pilots – John Ramain – from the other side of the world to fly it,” Mr Taylor said.

“The Messerschmitt is one of the most famous fighter aircraft ever built, and was very significant in the World War two air battles. Seeing one fly in New Zealand for the first time in 20 years is a coup, but it will also give us lots of scope to teach about the history of the war at the same time, including to the area’s primary schools.”

Donations from the Otago Community Trust for November & December totalled $1,210,992 to 49 organisations.

Trust Chief Executive Barbara Bridger was pleased to support significant developments across the region, with several large donations for facility improvements including $500,000 towards a new pool in Wanaka, and $250,000 for a new medical centre in Palmerston.

At the same time the Trust is also pleased to be helping with a major environmental project in Fiordland. The Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust is creating an “island sanctuary” for threatened birds in the Routeburn, Dart and tributary valleys that is free from introduced pests. The Otago Community Trust donation will help purchase predator traps to prevent re-invasion of stoats.

The Trust’s investment into facilities has been welcomed by East Otago Community Health Trust Chair Mary O'Connell. “It’s very important to a small rural community to have this level of support; we are all very grateful.”

“Our current medical centre is housed in a run-down 90-year-old building which is not suitable for a modern medical practice. We are now planning a much needed purpose-built facility to improve the provision of health care to patients across a wide area in East Otago, and at the same time help to retain doctors and medical services in the area,” she said.

The Otago Community Trust also backed the University Oval embankment improvements project to the tune of $80,000. Funding from the Otago Community Trust will help upgrade and increase the size of the embankment around the playing ground perimeter. This will increase audience numbers from 3,500 to 5,700, while the slope will make it easier for people to watch events.

A $60,000 donation to King's High School will be used to build a three-lane covered cricket practice facility.

The Caversham Harrier & Athletic Club received $65,000 towards upgrading the toilet, kitchen and meeting areas in its clubrooms, along with a new equipment storage area.

The Otago Community Trust also helped the Strath Taieri Agriculture & Rural Tourism Trust with a donation towards upgrading tennis courts in Middlemarch.
