The Otago Presbyterian campsite at Tirohanga in North Taieri is to undergo a make-over that will be welcome by disabled users of the facility.

The Otago Community Trust donated $15,000 towards a major renovation of the facility near Mosgiel, including the construction of paraplegic ablution facilities as well as a brand-new meeting room and laundry facilities.

Campsite Committee Chairman John Spiers said the expansion marks an exciting period for the camp, which is well used by schools during the week, and by many community and church organisations at the weekend. “It will make a big difference to what we can offer the many groups that use the indoor and outdoor facilities, and will enable more disabled people to stay overnight.”

It’s hoped construction will be complete by the end of summer.

The Community Trust last month donated $100,480 to a total of 16 Otago organisations.

A $25,000 donation from the Trust has gone a long way to helping the Cromwell Bowling Club with fundraising to replace its current green with a new artificial surface – a significant project for the community.

Fundraising convenor Les Wilson said the green is well used by up to 900 club members and bowlers from the wider Central and Lakes district, as well as holiday makers.  The club is currently putting a lot of work into keeping the diseased turf surface up to standard, but is looking forward to getting a high quality artificial surface down to save on operating costs and give a much longer playing season.

Funding from the Otago Community Trust is helping several festivals, including the Dunedin Scottish Festival from August 31 until September 3 2014. For the first time in New Zealand, Dunedin is hosting the Pacific Rim Burns Clubs gathering & AGM during the festival.

It is also supporting the new "Oamaru Arts Festival" next year, an event that will bring together a celebration of the arts, heritage, tourism and culture in Oamaru and the Waitaki District.

A donation to the Dunedin Friend-Link Trust will assist with a volunteer buddy programme, while the Alzheimer’s Society Otago will receiving funding to help buy a tracking system to help people with the illness who may wander.

It also helped St Leonards School to buy equipment to run a community radio station from the school.
