Anzac commemorations, robotics kits, short films, and keeping an historic movie cinema operating are just some of the projects supported by the Otago Community Trust over the last month.

A total of $316,930 was donated to 32 Otago organisations in February.

The Trust is helping the New Zealand Dance Advancement Trust with the cost of presenting the Rotunda 2015 National Tour.  Rotunda, a contemporary dance production performed by The New Zealand Dance Company in collaboration with the NZ Army Band, is timed to honour the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in 1915.

Described as a  beautiful collision of a live brass band with the raw power of contemporary dance, the show celebrates the ANZAC spirit, portraying themes of courage, loss, kinship and peace.  Eight dancers will perform to heartfelt hymns and stunning, new brass works by New Zealand composers.

There will be two Dunedin performances at the Regent Theatre - one for general public and a matinee for schools.

The Community Trust has also continued its support of the Dunedin Returned Services Choir, contributing $2500 towards hosting the Anzac Review in the Dunedin Town Hall on Anzac Day – this year marking the WW1 centenary.

The Community Trust donated $1,400 to the NZ Institute of Surveyors Coastal Otago Branch towards the cost of restoring the grave of Charles Kettle, Dunedin's founding surveyor.  This project is being undertaken in partnership with the Historic Cemeteries Conservation Trust.

Kettle had a pivotal part in the design of Dunedin’s streetscape, based closely on its sister city Edinburgh, Scotland, imposing “a bold design on a challenging landscape.”  The resulting streetscapes provide many spectacular vistas and approaches, and the public spaces and the Town Belt are particular features that make Dunedin special.

Kettle died of typhoid in 1862, aged around 41.  His badly deteriorated grave in Dunedin’s Southern Cemetery is being repaired, and at the same time a plaque explaining his role in Dunedin’s history is being compiled.

The Community Trust is also assisting the Roxburgh Entertainment Centre, established in 1897 and thought to be one of the longest running purpose-built cinemas world-wide.  Changes from 35 mm film to digital last year has forced the centre to invest in new digital project equipment, the Otago Community Trust meeting the $18,000 shortfall to allow weekly movies to again be shown in Roxburgh.

“We have up to 100 children at some shows, so we’re thrilled the Trust has been able to help us continue to offer accessible and affordable entertainment to our small Central Otago town,” spokesperson Gaynor Crabbe said.

A Community Trust donation to the South Otago High School is helping to buy seven Robotic Kits for a programme to be introduced in 2015, giving students the opportunity to learn about robotics in a hands-on environment.

The Trust is also continuing to support Short Film Otago, donating $42,500 towards producing four short films to be screened in major centres throughout Otago this year.
