New Three-Year Programme Aims to Transform Youth Relationship Education
1 Oct 2025
Otago Community Trust is pleased to announce a significant three-year grant of $450,000 to Youthline Otago through the Tamariki & Rangatahi Impact Fund for their groundbreaking Sexual Violence Primary Prevention Initiative. This funding will support the development and implementation of a culturally responsive programme designed to prevent sexual violence and promote healthy relationships among rangatahi across Otago.
Addressing an Important Community Need
The initiative responds to well-documented research showing that sexual violence prevention education is essential for young people. The programme recognises that some communities face additional challenges and require tailored support.
This initiative addresses a critical gap in prevention education, particularly for Year 10 and 11 students where feedback has identified a lack of appropriate content for these age groups. What sets this initiative apart is its commitment to meaningful youth engagement. Youthline Otago has established a rangatahi advisory group to ensure the programme content remains relevant and effective.
“We are stoked to be able to address a significant gap in sexual violence primary prevention education in Otago secondary schools…” said Justine Weatherall, General Manager of Youthline Otago. “This grant will enable Youthline Otago to develop a robust sexual violence primary prevention programme that is not only informed by youth and our community but also supported by research and specialists in the field.”
The programme will incorporate te ao Māori perspectives and a Community Advisory Group will ensure the programme reflects the diverse needs of all rangatahi in the region.
Evidence-Based Prevention
Rather than focusing solely on traditional consent education approaches, the programme takes a comprehensive view of sexual violence prevention by addressing underlying social norms and cultural factors. The initiative will use validated measurement tools to track changes in attitudes and behaviours.
Looking Forward
The three-year programme will encompass comprehensive research, community engagement, programme development, and thorough evaluation to ensure maximum impact. Youthline Otago is already planning for the programme's future sustainability, with aspirations to expand into Central Otago following the successful completion of the initial three-year period.
This investment in primary prevention focuses on building positive social norms and healthy relationship foundations with young people, creating lasting change that benefits entire communities for years to come.
“I have been extremely humbled by the support we have received for this mahi already and am really looking forward to the journey ahead” said Justine.
