New penguin viewing platform at Pilots Beach

The Otago Community Trust is helping visitors to Taiaroa Head view our blue penguins without compromising their natural habitat.

The Trust provided $20,000 to the Pukekura Trust towards building a viewing platform at Pilots Beach on the Otago Peninsula. The platform keeps visitors away from the beach during sunset, the time when up to 200 penguins return from the sea to nest on land overnight. This keeps the penguins and their habitat safe , yet still gives visitors a viewing experience and shows off our wonderful wildlife. The Pukekura Trust is also improving revegetation to extend protection for the penguins.
