In late 2019 Mornington School embarked on a significant Astro Turf project which saw the school upgrade a poor quality surface and address unresolved levelling problems on their hilltop location. The original surface, which was laid last century, was set down on top of existing cracked playground concrete and as such had not lasted well. The uneven surface meant that is was not fit for purpose as a community facility for futsal, hockey, soccer and / or touch nor as a basic flat school play area.

Mornington School is one of the few public play areas in the small Dunedin suburb of Mornington that is accessible for the public out of school hours, it is a well utilised space by the school each day and the public after school and at weekends for sport and recreation. Therefore, the school felt that a significant investment in a new Astro Turf facility would serve the school alongside the community well.

The transformation has been exceptional. Mornington School principal Brett Caldwell is delighted to report that 330 happy children are readily using the space. The School's "Play is the Way" programme is looking forward to utilising the space daily at the school year kicks off for 2020 and the pitch surface will be used at break times for futsal, soccer and hockey games.

Otago Community Trust was pleased to provide a helping hand to the project via a $20,000 grant to the school. However, credit goes to Mornington School and the school’s PTA committee for raising the remaining funds to successfully complete the project for the school and its wider community. Well Done.
