Serving its community for well over 150 years, Papakaio School sits at the heart of a broad rural catchment. In 2024, they received the Bronze Enviroschools Award from the Waitaki District Council, recognising their commitment to sustainability and cultural inclusivity. The installation of 77 solar panels was the next milestone on that journey.

Not only do the panels reduce the school's electricity costs and carbon footprint, they're also becoming part of the curriculum. Data from the inverter feeds directly into classroom learning, giving students a live window into how renewable energy works. Tracking output, measuring savings, and turning maths and science into something they can see, measure, and understand as they go about their daily lives. It’s a remarkable hands-on teaching tool with real numbers, impact, and relevance to the world students are growing up in.

Whānau have already noticed changes in how their children talk about energy, recycling, and waste at home. For Papakaio School, solar panels are a practical investment in both the present and the future, reducing costs today while modelling the kind of environmental stewardship that will matter long after students have left the classroom.
