The surface was "Olympic grade'', the same as what was being used for the 2016 summer Games, he said.

The pitch will be named the Pioneer Energy Turf due to a partnership with the company.

It cost between $700,000 and $800,000 and was part of a larger $1.7 million renovation. "This marks the halfway point.''

Facilities including a viewing room, kitchen, changing rooms and toilets should be finished within 12 months, he said.

Teams played on the turf for the past few months, but it just needed "tidying up'' before the unveiling, he said.

The turf will act as a home ground for teams throughout Central Otago/Lakes district.

Money was raised from Central Lakes Trust, the Otago Community Trust and the Cromwell Community Board among other groups.
