Fraser McKenzie

North Otago

Fraser has had a career spanning 37 years in the field of accounting, having spent 15 years in Christchurch and 22 in Oamaru. Fraser was raised and initially educated in Dunedin. After high school, he attended Lincoln University in 1980, where he completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Agriculture with a specialization in Valuation and Farm Management. Subsequently, he pursued further education at Canterbury University, earning a Bachelor of Commerce with a focus on Accounting and Finance.

At the conclusion of his studies at Lincoln, Fraser was offered a position as an Agri Banker. However, a pivotal moment occurred during one of his final lectures when he was inspired by an infamous farm accountant. His presentation convinced Fraser that the rural industry needed accountants who were passionate about farming. Fraser's passion for farming had taken root at the age of 12 when he began working on farms in Central Otago during school holidays, a practice he continued until his enrollment at Lincoln.

Throughout his career, Fraser has been actively engaged in various boards and organisations, which not only enhanced his understanding of the accountant's role but also allowed him to pursue personal interests and goals while supporting his family. These involvements ranged from special interest groups such as the NZ Institute of Primary Industry Management, Chamber of Commerce, and Development Boards to school boards of trustees and sports clubs. Fraser has always relished the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse array of organisations.

Fraser's pursuit of further education at Massey University and facilitation training with Beef and Lamb NZ also reinforced his belief in the value of "Teaching not Preaching." This concept centers on the ability to engage with people effectively and encourage them to learn and understand what works best for them.
