Sumpter Wharf Restoration Trust - Scott commemoration
The Otago Community Trust was pleased to be involved in telling a story about Otago that is often overlooked.
Early in 2013, Oamaru held events to commemorate the visit 100 years ago to their harbour by the Terra Nova, the ship that took Robert Scott and his team on their ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The boat slipped unannounced into the port of Oamaru on its return from Antarctica in February 10, 1913 to quietly telegraph the UK with news of the death of Scott.
The Otago Community Trust donated $10,000 towards a range of commemorative events over five days, which included a reinactment, a Victorian banquet with guest speaker James Blake, son of Sir Peter, a specially-written play, a commemorative book, a free concert, historical lectures, and a NZ navy presence. Events focused on fun and innovation to showcase the historic Oamaru harbour.
