September 2010 Donations

  • 29-Nov-10

The Otago Surf Lifesaving Association are hoping over 5000 Otago children will reap the benefits of beach safety education this year, thanks to on-going support from the Otago Community Trust.

Twenty nine Otago organisations benefitted from Otago Community Trust donations over September.

Donations totalled $141,000, including $28,000 to the Otago Surf Lifesaving Association for this season’s Beach Education Programme; the 16th year the Trust has supported this course.

The Association actively promotes beach education as a way of improving safety on our beaches. The cornerstone for children’s education over the summer months is the Association’s Beach Education programme, which makes aquatic safety classes available to all Otago schools.

Last year over 5000 children from throughout Otago got the beach safety message through this programme.

Co-ordinated by the Water Safety Council of NZ, the programme also delivers sun safety rules as well as key water safety messages.

Otago Community Trust Chief Executive Keith Ellwood said the Association’s programme enjoys continued support from the Trust because it’s an important community service.

“It’s a worthwhile educational programme that delivers, reaching a lot of children over a relatively short time in the summer term. It appeals to the youngsters because they also have fun at the beach while they’re learning the rules,” Mr Ellwood said.
