Otago Museum - upgrade of the historic post office
18 Jul 2013
A landmark heritage building that Dunedin people know and love is again a part of community life, thanks to the Otago Museum and a $100,000 donation from Otago Community Trust.
The beautiful bluestone building on the corner of Albany Street and Great King Street was a post office for over 90 years from 1879. Ownership transferred to the Dunedin City Council in 1971, and the space was leased by the Otago Art Society until 2007, when the Otago Museum took over.
The newly redeveloped multi-use facility, named the Otago Museum H D Skinner Annex, provides an additional exhibition gallery for the Museum as well as a number of multi-use spaces available for hire, including the Otago Community Trust Conservatory. The redevelopment successfully retained the building's heritage values while making it suitable for 21st century use.
