Otago Community Trust, June 2014 Donations
Otago Community Trust funding for Otago youth this month is providing community programmes in South Dunedin, and supporting people in need through Youthline Otago.
The Community Trust gave the Straight Up Trust $10,000 towards providing community programmes this year. It funds five part-time youth workers for South Dunedin schools, as well as organising Rock Solid youth clubs in the area every evening, and leadership courses for youth in need.
Its spokesperson Kristin Jack said over 100 young people attend club nights, the funding allowing the Trust to make activities both affordable and accessible.
Ground Zero leadership courses are in high demand, and is planning to expand into further South Dunedin schools.
Mr Jack said the programme and the clubs have a strength-based approach. “We help young people to identify their strengths and work on those, rather than trying to fix what is wrong. Many attending the programme have only been told what they are not capable of, and they need help to identify what they are good at.”
South Dunedin school principals are noting the result are youth with more positive leadership and co-operative skills and improved self-esteem, while parents are appreciating the improved self-confidence in their young person.
The Otago Community Trust donated $10,000 to Youthline Otago to help towards the cost of its 24/7 helpline programme, providing support to young people in need.
A total of $892,932 was donated to 57 organisations by the Otago Community Trust in June 2014, $768,500 of that to Otago sporting bodies via its annual sports development grants.
Other donations over the month included $30,000 to the Paradise Trust to assist with the cost of relocating the historic Glenorchy school and upgrading its annex for accommodation.
The Community Trust also donated $5,000 to the Taieri Parents Centre to build an outdoor area onto their centre, $15,000 to the Royal New Zealand Ballet to help stage performances in Otago, and $500 to the Otago Malaysian Students Association (OMSA) to assist with the cost of holding "Malam Malaysia," its annual night of arts.
