The Naseby Development Charitable Trust (NDCT) was formed in March 2012 to enable the community to construct a family friendly recreation park with mountain biking and walking tracks.  Nestled at the foot of the Ida Mountain Range, Naseby is a wonderful place to go when you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. One of the star attractions for many is the wide variety of tracks accessible within the forest area surrounding Naseby.

The Naseby Development Charitable Trust worked closely with forestry owner Ernslaw One Ltd to make their vision become a reality. Ernslaw One provided the Naseby community with 500 hectares of forestry area which could be readily used for walking and biking.

Over the last five years, the Naseby Development Charitable Trust have worked hard to upgrade the forest area to a more dedicated recreation park, complete with upgraded tracks, improved signage and ablution facilities. All of which serve to attract more people to the area and improve economic development opportunities.

The Otago Community Trust was pleased to provide a donation of $6,500 to the Naseby Development Charitable Trust in 2013 to assist with the recreation park development. As anticipated the upgrade of this forest area to a recreation area has noticeably attracted many more people to the Naseby township and the Maniototo. It has supported the growth of annual events such as the 12 Hour Naseby Challenge and is frequently used for skills training and development programmes.

We are pleased to see that new additional signs are soon to be erected in the park for mountain biking enthusiasts, supporting the old along with the new trails that continue to be developed over time.  Naseby has recently been described as one of the best holiday spots in New Zealand, so if you haven’t been perhaps a visit this summer is on the cards.
