The Otago Community Trust supports world snowboard and ski event in Wanaka

Snowsports NZ is thrilled assistance from the Otago Community Trust will help it host the first junior world snowboarding and free-skiing championships in the Southern Hemisphere.

The snowboard and freestyle Junior World Championships, to be held at Wanaka’s Cardrona and Snowpark skifields from August 20 to 31 this year, has already attracted entries from over 350 up-and–coming young free-skiers and snowboarders from 26 countries, with more entries expected.

Several of these competitors, aged from 14 to 20, are ranked amongst top in the world overall (not just junior), while others are promising youngsters who will be names to watch out for in the coming years.

Event Director Arthur Klapp said it’s always more challenging to attract sponsorship for junior championships, making the $25,000 Community Trust investment all the more critical. “Without the support of the Trust, and from the considerable number of volunteers, the event just couldn’t happen.”

New Zealand hosting the event is a big deal for the country’s athletes being able to compete against world-class competition, and will be a great boost for the  local economy.

It’s also a significant international milestone on the world stage. This is the first time the freestyle half pipe, freestyle slope style and snowboard slope style events have been held at a world championship event, which will pave the way for the three disciplines to be included in future Winter Olympics Games.

“It also gives New Zealand another opportunity of proving its capability in hosting events at an international level,” Mr Klapp  said.

Clinton prepares for jubilee in Rugby world Cup year, with help from the Otago Community Trust

A $25,000 grant from the Otago Community Trust will make sure the Clinton Rugby Clubrooms are in top shape for its 125th reunion.

The club is celebrating its jubilee in June next year (Rugby World Cup year), so it’s important to the community that the clubrooms are ready to host the big event. It’s also expected the clubrooms will be used during the NZ Ploughing Championships in April, 2011, at Wairuna, near Clinton.

A planned upgrade of the clubrooms includes extending the kitchen and an extensive renovation of the interior, something the club’s members have been fundraising for over many months.

It’s hoped work can get underway as soon as possible after the rugby season has finished.

Junior rugby is strong in the Clinton region, and the rooms are currently used every weekend for the youngsters and their families after Saturday competition, while the senior team also make good use of the facilities when they have home games.  Not only that, it is also used by the Clinton School, and is an excellent space for community functions.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic to get the Trust’s support for this – projects like this just wouldn’t get off the ground if they had to rely solely on community fundraising,” Club Renovation Committee spokesperson Kate Anderson said.
