Harts Daffodil Charitable Trust
Nothing welcomes spring like daffodils, something the people of Otago get to appreciate when the Hart family of Lawrence hosts its annual daffodil gala day.
Originally planted in 1895, there are thousands of daffodils on the 10 acre site which once housed the Hart's Black Horse brewery, Otago's most successful provincial brewery (including throughout prohibition). Even when the brewery closed, the site was still a popular destination, many hundreds of Dunedin people travelling to Lawrence by train in the spring up until the mid 1950's.
Dunedin visitors are now bussed up for the daffodil gala day in September, which the Otago Community Trust supported with a $750 donation in 2012. Historically the daffodils on the brewery site were picked for charity, a tradition that has been revived, with a different charity benefitting each year - 2012 being the Lawrence Playcentre.
