Extending the Waitaki Community Gardens
13 Feb 2014
The gardens created by the Waitaki Community Gardens Trust have become an outdoor classroom for the Waitaki community.
The Trust owns a large piece of land for its locals to grow vegetables and herbs, and includes a glass house, tunnel house, orchard, wind turbine, coppice block, and a mosaic couch. The Otago Community Trust is helping the Gardens Trust out, providing $2,500 towards improving the steep access track to the gardens, to make it more easily reached by all members of the community.
The Gardens aren't just a physical environment, they also provide a social network. By helping with gardening skills, the Trust is empowering members of the community to grow and cook their own food, transferring basic life skills across age, culture and gender. The Trust also has a stall at the Dunedin Farmers Market, and gives to the Dunedin food banks.
