Thank You to Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust for sharing this great video of the Diamond Lake Native Habitat Restoration project with their recent Accountability report. Produced by Flashworks Media, the video beautifully explains the great benefits of the restoration project. The Otago Community Trust was pleased to assist the Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust with the cost of the purchase, planting & maintenance of 1200 native plants at Diamond Lake Conservation Area near Wanaka. Since establishment of the Trust in 2007, Te Kakano has put into the ground over 15,000 plants around the tracks, trails and reserves of the Upper Clutha and recorded nearly 10,000 hours of volunteer time in the nursery and at planting sites.

Te Kakano collects seeds from local areas, with permission from the Department of Conservation, and grows them at a community-based nursery. The Diamond Lake Native Habitat Restoration project ensures native biodiversity is increased, habitat for native wildlife (insects, frogs, reptiles and birds) is created and water quality and landscapes are enhanced, alongside providing a sense of place and identity.

The great benefit of the restoration project is that it will be enjoyed by current and future generations of both locals and visitors to the area. Well done to Flashworks Media for coming on board as a corporate sponsor. You can learn more about Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust by visiting their website tekakano.org.nz
