April Donations
Large Donations
The Trust approved donations totalling $811,800 to 34 organisations throughout Otago in April, including the Lawrence Chinese Camp project, $25,000 to assist with purchasing and relocating an original dwelling back to the campsite, $500,000 in annual grants to several welfare and social services agencies in Otago to support their community programmes. Outward Bound was again supported with the same funding as last year. This enables one student from each of the 25 high schools in Otago to attend Outward Bound, amounting to a subsidy for each student of $2,700. The Otago Medical Foundation received an annual donation for medical research programmes; this year totalling $75,000, and the Fortune Theatre received $45,000 for its 2009 programme.
The Otago Medical Research Foundation was established in 1968 to foster and further research in the Otago region, providing local researchers the opportunity to research a range of medical and health-related subjects. All the principal researchers are at the forefront of international research as well as tertiary education. This donation is to assist with funding research projects related to public and community health issues, as well as helping to employ and provide students with experience as lab assistants.
Outward Bound Trust is an educational charitable trust specialising in the personal development of young New Zealanders. It aims to address the problems facing young people by exploring their personal potential, raising self-esteem and building self confidence. The Trust has its facility at Anakiwa, Queen Charlotte Sound, at the top of the South Island. The Community Trust’s donation will enable one student from each school teaching secondary education in Otago to attend a 22 day course. The Trust has received fantastic feedback from the students who have benefitted from this in past year, which gives us real confidence in continuing with this.
Dunedin’s Fortune Theatre, the world's southernmost professional theatre company, has been operating since 1973in a former church in Moray Place. The theatre is a repertory theatre, hosting local and touring shows, and will be using its donation of $45,000 for its running and producing shows over 2009.
Lawrence was the site of the first Chinese gold miners' camp, formed in 1867 and the largest Chinese camp in the country. The Chinese Camp is a registered heritage site. As the gateway to the Central Otago goldfields it attracted top merchants, interpreters and doctors and had the only two Joss Houses in Otago. The Lawrence Chinese Camp Charitable Trust, led by Dr Jim Ng of Dunedin, has plans to restore the site and create a major visitor experience.
