Otago Community Trust announces April donations

Otago’s community health and welfare agencies have received a welcome boost to their coffers this month, with the Otago Community Trust announcing its annual health and welfare grants.

Otago Community Trust donations totalling $853,000 were distributed by to 35 organisations throughout Otago in April, said CEO, Mr Keith Ellwood.  Included in this month’s grants were the Trust’s annual donations to the region’s large social service agencies, this year amounting to $483,000 across 11 agencies.

The 2010 grants include $120,000 to the Presbyterian Support Services to assist with running some of its community programmes, the Dunedin Methodist Mission and Anglican Family Care each received $60,000, and the Malcam Charitable Trust was granted $35,000.

“This is always a much-appreciated investment in the region’s welfare programmes, providing on-going and invaluable assistance to people in the community who need support,” said Mr Ellwood.

As well as its annual social services investment, the Trust also maintained its yearly support for several other worthy Otago programmes, which again is very well received.

This financial assistance included $50,000 for the Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust to run the ever-popular biennial Festival of Colour in Wanaka, and $75,000 to assist the Otago Medical Research Foundation support Otago-based researchers studying medical and health-related subjects related to important public or community health issues. This funding has delivered considerable health research knowledge back into the community in past years.

Western Progress League Inc.

The Western Progress League has also welcomed Trust investment in its community hall upgrade. The Trust has given the League $80,000 towards a substantial upgrade of the 110- year-old Weston Hall.

The hall, the major community centre for the Weston area, will undergo a major facelift, including renovating and modernising upgrading its entranceway and supper room, as well as upgrading and equipping its aged kitchen and toilet facilities.

Outward Bound

The Community Trust’s $67,500 donation will enable one student from each Otago school teaching secondary education to attend a 22 day course at the Outward Bound facility at Anakiwa, Queen Charlotte Sound, at the top of the South Island. Each of the 25 schools runs its own process for selecting the young person from its school, but all schools agree there are considerable benefits to the individual, their families, and to the school in being given the opportunity to attend the development programme.  Outward Bound Trust is an educational charitable trust specialising in the personal development of young New Zealanders. It aims to address the problems facing young people by exploring their personal potential, raising self-esteem and building self confidence.
