A new bus for the Otago Heritage Bus Society
The Otago Community Trust has donated $4000 towards buying a low entrance door heritage bus for Dunedin.
The Otago Heritage Bus Society was formed in 2011 to save the last in a 90-year line of British Leyland buses serving Dunedin. The Society now organises volunteer-run public transport on the three days buses don't operate in Dunedin - Christmas, Good Friday and Easter - so the community can benefit from its bus restoration efforts. This has been great fun and is rewarding to provide transport for people who would otherwise find it difficult to visit family or church on these days.
The unfortunate aspect of using classic vehicles in the community is that their steep front steps are hard for elderly or disabled people to climb – the solution was to look for another heritage bus with a much lower entrance, something the Community Trust is helping to fund.
