Otago Community Trust announces May donations.
The “Big Sing” is the big winner in May’s round of donations from the Otago Community Trust.
The Trust approved donations totally $64,000 to 17 organisations throughout Otago over the last month, said CEO Keith Ellwood.
The NZ Choral Federation receives $10,000 towards hosting the New Zealand final of Secondary Schools choirs competition. The “Big Sing” is a major national music event expected to attract around 800 of New Zealand’s finest secondary school singers to Dunedin.
A $5,000 donation was given to the NZ Salmon Anglers Assocation for smolt release into Otago Harbour, allowing a continuation of the programme that supports salmon sport fishing in the city.
The Trust is also supporting Stroke Foundation Southern Region services in Otago with a $7,500 grant.

Regional secondary school choir competitions are currently being held throughout New Zealand, and the top 20 selected from these events will compete in Dunedin’s
Town Hall over three days of August, culminating in a gala performance.
The national event is expected to attract considerable support, particularly from out-of-town, with organiser Carole Randall saying the showcase of talent focuses on the positive aspects of youth.
“We’re grateful to the Trust and for the goodwill of supporters in the community for investing in our youth in this way, particularly in this current economic environment. The $10,000 donation has allowed us to host the event in the Dunedin Town Hall, making full use of its excellent acoustics.”
NZ Salmon Anglers Association
A lack of suitable rivers means the salmon living in Otago Harbour are unable to spawn, so an annual release of smolt helps sustain its salmon population.
The Otago Community Trust donation has helped purchase the 30,000 salmon smolt released into the Harbour this month, benefitting anglers who fish off the harbour’s wharves, headlands and recreational boats from November to May.
The Association also organises a very popular salmon fishing competition in late summer, which attracts up to 400 local and out-of-town anglers. “Our harbour salmon fishing has become a very well-known resource amongst New Zealand fisherman,” Association vice-president Peter Coory said.
