Otago Community Trust Announces May Donations

Improved harbour access for the Portobello community is a step closer thanks to an Otago Community Trust donation. The Trust has donated $25,000 to the Portobello Community Inc, which in partnership with the Dunedin City Council, intends to replace the current jetty and wooden ramp.  Despite its Otago harbour location, Portobello’s access to the water is minimal, so a new jetty will improve harbour access and safety, enabling Portobello residents and visitors to enjoy the harbour in as many ways as possible. The jetty and boat ramp is estimated to cost $340,000.

A total of $902,000 was distributed by the Otago Community Trust to 24 organisations throughout Otago in April, said CEO, Mr Keith Ellwood.

The Trust continues its significant support of the Southern Sinfonia with annual donation of $55,000, the same investment as last year.

Community Trust donations also include $20,000 to the Central Otago District Council towards an artificial surface for the tennis courts in Pioneer Park, Alexandra. The Vincent Community Board will use this donation to develop a three court recreation space laid with synthetic grass for community use.

The Regent Theatre redevelopment has also benefitted this month, with donation of a $750,000. The backstage upgrade will include a new counterweight system, battens, fly galleries and header blocks for scenery lines.

Dunedin Civic Orchestra

The Southern Sinfonia is one of four professional regional orchestras in New Zealand.  The Sinfonia presents a five-concert subscription series over the year as well as its schools, chamber and Proms concerts. It also regularly accompany productions by resident and touring opera, ballet, musical and choral companies.

It has over many years produced education programmes well-received  by the Dunedin community, which provide students with musical ability ranging from beginner to advanced the opportunity to improve their skills through interaction with Sinfonia players. The $55,000 donation will be used across several community programmes, including an education programme in schools, an academy programme for youth, and also some workshops and master classes.

Otago Community Trust announces May donations.

The “Big Sing” is the big winner in May’s round of donations from the Otago Community Trust.

The Trust approved donations totally $64,000 to 17 organisations throughout Otago over the last month, said CEO Keith Ellwood.

The NZ Choral Federation receives $10,000 towards hosting the New Zealand final of Secondary Schools choirs competition. The “Big Sing” is a major national music event expected to attract around 800 of New Zealand’s finest secondary school singers to Dunedin.

A $5,000 donation was given to the NZ Salmon Anglers Assocation for smolt release into Otago Harbour, allowing a continuation of the programme that supports salmon sport fishing in the city.

The Trust is also supporting Stroke Foundation Southern Region services in Otago with a $7,500 grant.

NZ Choral Federation

Regional secondary school choir competitions are currently being held throughout New Zealand, and the top 20 selected from these events will compete in Dunedin’s

Town Hall over three days of August, culminating in a gala performance.

The national event is expected to attract considerable support, particularly from out-of-town, with organiser Carole Randall saying the showcase of talent focuses on the positive aspects of youth.

“We’re grateful to the Trust and for the goodwill of supporters in the community for investing in our youth in this way, particularly in this current economic environment. The $10,000 donation has allowed us to host the event in the Dunedin Town Hall, making full use of its excellent acoustics.”

NZ Salmon Anglers Association

A lack of suitable rivers means the salmon living in Otago Harbour are unable to spawn, so an annual release of smolt helps sustain its salmon population.

The Otago Community Trust donation has helped purchase the 30,000 salmon smolt released into the Harbour this month, benefitting anglers who fish off the harbour’s wharves, headlands and recreational boats from November to May.

The Association also organises a very popular salmon fishing competition in late summer, which attracts up to 400 local and out-of-town anglers. “Our harbour salmon fishing has become a very well-known resource amongst New Zealand fisherman,” Association vice-president Peter Coory said.
