Otago Community Trust announces December donations

The Otago Community Trust has given Moana House $95,000 towards a major upgrade of its community rehabilitation facilities in Dunedin.  The grant was part of $443,000 distributed by the Otago Community Trust to to 36 organisations throughout Otago in December, said CEO Mr Keith Ellwood.

Other larger donations included Te Runanga Otakou $92,000 to assist with design costs for the upgrade of its marae facilities, Servants Health Centre Trust $25,000 to set up in Dunedin a facility for people who cannot afford access to the health care they need, and Netball Otago $50,000 towards the Southern Steel's 2010 Tasman Cup campaign.

Downie Stewart Foundation – Moana House

Moana House is a therapeutic community facility run by the Downie Stewart Foundation, which assists male offenders with drug and alcohol problems.  It has been operating in Dunedin for 22 years. IIts existing 11 bed facility will be expanded, with the Ministry of Health funding a further six beds as part of the Prime Minister’s Methamphetamine Plan.  The upgrade of the newhouse will begin in the new year, and it’s hoped it will be in use by April 2010. 

Te Runanga O Otakou

 The $92,000 grant will be used to complete the detailed design phase of the planned expansion and upgrade of the Marae facilities at Otakou near Dunedin.

Netball Otago

The Otago Community Trust’s annual donation to Netball Otago will assist with the costs of the Southern Steel netball team competing in the 2010 Tasman Cup in New Zealand.

Servants Health Centre Trust

The Servants Health Centre Trust has been set up by a group of health professionals who are concerned about the unequal access to health care, and the growing  number of people who cannot afford to get the health care they need. The $25,000 donation will assist with the set-up costs of the centre.

Cromwell Early Learning Centre

The Cromwell Early Learning Centre will use its $25,000 donation to assist with extending its facilities. The planned construction will include an administration area, staff room and meeting rooms, freeing up the current classroom space for education activities.

Kaka Point Bowling Club

The Bowling Club will use its $20,000 donation from the Trust to upgrade its clubhouse.

$125,000 for First Church Spire Restoration

The First Church has received a funding boost of $125,000 from the Otago Community Trust. The donation will assist with the major restoration project currently being undertaken on the church spire. First Church announced last week that it would start a public appeal to fund the $600,000 refurbishment of the towering 56.4m spire after much more restoration work was found to be required due to the Church’s Category 1 Heritage New Zealand classification.
