Otago Community Trust announces August donations

A biography of gold miner Gabriel Read, a cycle track near Middlemarch and a building for Port Chalmers children in the community’s afterschool programme are just some of the projects the Otago Community Trust has supported this month.

A total of $267,060 was donated to 33 organisations throughout Otago by the Otago Community Trust in August, said CEO, Mr Keith Ellwood.

The Koputai Kids After School Programme were thrilled the $60,000 grant from the Trust will allow building to start on a new facility on the Port Chalmers school grounds.

Fundraising in the Port Chalmers community has been on-going for over a year, so the project was “massively excited” to secure the trust funding, Programme Management Committee chairperson Jessamy George said.

The afternoon and school holiday programme, which caters for up to 24 children, had been sharing the local swimming clubrooms, and was looking forward to being able to permanently set up its activities in its own child-friendly open plan facility.

The new building to be located in the Port Chalmers School, will continue to cater for after school and school holiday needs of children from all the schools in the greater Port Chalmers area. “We’re an important part of the Port Chalmers community.”

It is currently awaiting Ministry of Education approval before building work can begin, hopefully later this year.

Oamaru

North Otago Netball members are rapt to receive a substantial donation towards their court resurfacing project. Netball is one of the biggest sports in the North Otago district, with competitors coming from as far away as Palmerston, Glenavy and even Twizel.

North Otago Netball secretary Samantha Growcott said the club had fund-raised $40,000 so far, through raffles, a goal-athon and a fashion parade towards the court resealing. “The Trust’s $25,000 donation has been a massive boost to our 900 members who play winter netball, and the 10 mixed teams who play in a summer league competition. We’re now well underway for getting the work done over the summer.”

The courts haven’t been resurfaced for around 16 years, so are suffering badly from cracking, lifting, moss and general wear and tear.

Meanwhile the Trust granted the Meadowbank Bowling Club in Oamaru $12,500 for a replacement carpet for its indoor surface, and the Waiareka Youth and Ministry $8,000 towards camps and youth activities.

Central Otago

The Otago Community Trust has invested $55,000 into a range of Central Otago projects this month, including golf, a playground, festivals, and a website.

The Community Trust has supported the Cromwell Golf Club’s upgrade programme, with a $10,000 donation to assist with buying a fairway mower. The Club is planning a major upgrade of its course and equipment over the next two years.

Omakau Golf Club Inc.  is also planning to purchase a greens mower; the Trust funding $7,000 towards the equipment.

The Cromwell & Districts Community Arts Council Inc. received $10,000 towards the purchase of a concert piano for the performing arts in the Cromwell district, both local and visiting.

The Trust donated $10,000 to the Hawea Community Association to assist with the construction of a playground in the township specifically for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

The Tarras Community Trust is putting $7,000 donated by the Trust towards producing a community video and website to publicise the area.

The Alexandra Blossom Festival Inc. received $3,000, Central Otago Wastebusters Inc. $3,000, the Alexandra District Club (Inc) RSA Bowling Club $2,500 and the Wanakafest Community Trust $2,500.

South Otago

The South Otago Scout Group’s plans to take scouts to the New Zealand Scout Jamboree in Hamilton at the end of 2010 has been boosted by a $4,560 donation from the Otago Community Trust.

The Trust also donated $4,000 to the Tuapeka Goldfields Museum Inc. towards the publishing costs of a biography on Gabriel Read. The discovery of gold by Gabriel Read in 1861 and the subsequent rush of miners to the Tuapeka district was a significant milestone that shaped the settlement and development of Otago and of New Zealand.

The biography will co-incide with plans by Lawrence for a major event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in March 2011.

The Otago Youth Adventure Trust Inc. received $2,000 from the Trust to assist with the construction of a cycle track at its Camp Sutton in Middlemarch.
