$400,000 Boost to Social Service Agencies across Otago

2 May 2016

Media Release

Ms Bridger notes that the Trust understands that the Government intends through its Community Investment Strategy to better align funding to target those members of our community with the highest needs and to therefore align funding to programmes and providers who demonstrate they are meeting those needs. Such changes to the funding model are likely to place pressure on our agencies, many who are already doing an outstanding job with limited resources. The Otago Community Trust is committed to working with providers to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved on behalf of the region’s residents.

Outside of social services organisations, an additional twenty four Otago community groups received a total of $133,602 from the Trust in April.

Anderson’s Bay School has received a $24,000 boost to its playground development. The Playscape project will make a significant difference to the physical environment at Anderson's Bay School.  It will meet an ever increasing need for enhancing the play and recreational area for students and the wider community.  A spokesperson from the school said “We are expecting to see active, happy, creative and collaborative children and community members in this fantastic new space”.

The Otago Community Trust will also help the Connected Media Charitable Trust through a $3,900 donation. This donation will assist with holding a series of ‘Outlook for Someday’ sustainability film-making workshops for young people in Wanaka, Alexandra & Dunedin. The workshops will be held between June and August. The ‘Outlook for Someday’ project offers young people a supportive framework within which to explore the big issues of their time through film.

The Otago Community Trust is also pleased to support the Clutha United Swimming Club with a $4,000 donation to purchase an underwater camera system to assist with members’ swimming development and the Northern Junior Football Club with a $750 donation to help with the purchase of new junior club uniforms.

As Dunedin welcomes the Syrian refugees to the city, the Otago Community Trust will also help with funding support to set up a national photographic exhibition. The exhibition will comprise of a series of two metre tall black and white portraits of refugees who have recently settled in New Zealand. The exhibition will be accompanied by a "human library", with local refugees sharing their own stories and engaging with those visiting the exhibition. Max Reid from Dunedin Welcomes Refugees said “the exhibition is to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about refugees by telling real stories of real people who have successfully made NZ their home”. The exhibition: “Transplanted: Refugee Portraits of New Zealand” will premier in Dunedin at the Dunedin Community Gallery from May 8th to 18th.
